Municípios are the primary subnational administrative divisions in many Portuguese-speaking countries, most notably Brazil and Portugal. They serve as the basic unit of local government, responsible for managing municipal affairs and providing essential public services to their residents. The concept of a município is rooted in the historical development of these nations, often evolving from earlier administrative structures.

In Brazil, municípios are the fundamental territorial units and are governed by a mayor (prefeito) and a municipal chamber (câmara municipal), which functions as the legislative body. They have autonomy in matters concerning local interests, such as urban planning, public transport, primary education, and basic healthcare. Each município is composed of a seat (sede), which is usually the urban center, and may include several districts (distritos) within its territory.

Similarly, in Portugal, a município, often referred to as a concelho, is the local administrative and political unit. It is headed by a president of the municipal assembly (presidente da assembleia municipal) and an executive council (câmara municipal). Municipalities in Portugal are responsible for a range of local services and are empowered to enact local regulations. The number and boundaries of municípios can change over time due to administrative reforms.
