Multiwarhead refers to a type of missile or bomb that carries multiple independent explosive payloads, or warheads. These warheads can be independently targeted, allowing a single delivery vehicle to engage multiple separate targets. This contrasts with single-warhead munitions, which deliver one explosive charge.

The primary advantage of multiwarhead systems is increased effectiveness and efficiency. A single missile can achieve the impact of multiple missiles, reducing the number of launches required and potentially overwhelming defensive systems. This can be particularly useful in scenarios where a rapid saturation of targets is desired.

Multiwarhead technology can be broadly categorized into two main types. The first is Multiple Independently targetable Reentry Vehicles (MIRVs), commonly associated with ballistic missiles. MIRVs are deployed from a single intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) and can travel on different trajectories to strike separate targets. The second type involves cluster munitions, where a single bomb or missile disperses multiple smaller submunitions over a wide area. These submunitions may be designed to detonate on impact or be time-delayed.

The development and deployment of multiwarhead systems have significant strategic implications, particularly in the context of nuclear deterrence and arms control. The ability to deliver multiple warheads from a single platform raises concerns about the potential for increased destructive capacity and the challenges in verifying arms reduction treaties. International agreements have sought to limit or ban certain types of multiwarhead systems, especially those involving nuclear weapons.
