multiversjonelle

Multiversjonelle is an adjective used to describe processes, data models, or systems that maintain and operate on multiple versions of an object or artifact at the same time. The term is formed from multi- (many) and versjonell (version-related) and is used in Norwegian to discuss version management across domains such as data storage, software development, and documentation.

In computing, multiversjonell concurrency control (MVCC) is a common technique in databases. MVCC keeps several versions of a data item to allow reads to proceed without blocking writers, reducing lock contention and improving throughput. Versions are created with updates and eventually consolidated or cleaned up according to retention policies or garbage collection rules.

APIs and software platforms often employ multiversjonelle practices by exposing multiple API versions concurrently. This enables backward compatibility as new features are added, with clients selecting a version through endpoints, headers, or negotiation mechanisms. Deprecation policies guide the transition to newer versions.

In data modeling and storage, temporal or multiversjonelle approaches preserve historical states of data. Schema migrations and versioned records support time-travel queries, auditing, and rollback scenarios. Some systems explicitly model version histories to enable reconstruction of past states or to compare versions side by side.

In software engineering, versioning strategies such as semantic versioning help communicate compatibility and changes across iterations. Version control systems provide a broader form of multiversion management for source code, enabling branching, merging, and historical retrieval of changes.
