A multitrack is a recording medium that allows for the separate recording and playback of multiple audio signals. Traditionally, this referred to magnetic tape, where different sound sources or performances were recorded onto distinct tracks on the tape. Each track could be individually controlled for volume, panning, and effects, and could be re-recorded or overdubbed without affecting the other tracks. This enabled complex musical arrangements and sound designs by layering various instruments, vocals, and sound effects.
