Multiprofessional is an approach in which professionals from multiple disciplines work together to plan, implement, and evaluate services for individuals or communities. The term is commonly used in health care, social services, education, and rehabilitation to describe collaborative practice that brings together diverse expertise to address complex needs. In a multiprofessional setting, each professional contributes their own disciplinary perspective while participating in shared goal setting, information exchange, and coordinated care planning. This distinguishes multiprofessional work from uncoordinated or parallel work across disciplines, and from some uses of the term multidisciplinary where collaboration is more limited in integration.

The core features include regular communication among team members, clearly defined roles, shared decision making, and a unified care or service plan that centers on the client’s preferences and outcomes. Multiprofessional education (MPE) is often pursued to prepare students from different professions to collaborate effectively.

Examples include a pediatric complex-needs team that includes a physician, nurse, social worker, occupational therapist, speech-language pathologist, and psychologist; or a school-based team addressing a student with multiple needs involving teachers, special educators, counselors, and therapists.

Challenges can include role ambiguity, professional hierarchies, time constraints, and differing documentation systems or reimbursement models. When well implemented, multiprofessional practice can improve holistic assessment, continuity of care, satisfaction, and outcomes for clients or populations.
