Multiplekseriä, often referred to as multiplexers or MUXes, are electronic devices or systems that select one of several analog or digital input signals and forward the selected input into a single output line. This process is known as multiplexing. Multiplexers are commonly used in telecommunications to combine multiple communication signals into a single channel. For example, a multiplexer can combine several voice calls onto a single telephone line.

In digital electronics, multiplexers are implemented as combinational logic circuits. They are essential components in digital systems for data routing and signal selection. A basic multiplexer has 2^n input lines, n select lines, and one output line. The select lines determine which of the input lines is connected to the output. For instance, a 2-to-1 multiplexer has two input lines and one select line. If the select line is low, the first input is passed to the output; if the select line is high, the second input is passed.

Multiplexers are widely employed in computer systems, including central processing units (CPUs) and memory systems, for selecting data paths and controlling data flow. They are also used in networking equipment, such as routers and switches, to manage and direct traffic. The primary advantage of using multiplexers is the ability to reduce the number of required wires or communication channels, leading to cost savings and increased efficiency.
