Multicofactor is a term that appears occasionally in scholarly writing, but it is not a standard or widely adopted term. In many cases it is used as a neologism or a variant of related terms such as “multifactor” or simply as a descriptor for systems that involve multiple cofactors. Because its usage is inconsistent, its precise meaning can vary depending on the context.

In biochemistry, cofactors are non-protein chemical components that assist enzymes. A multicofactor situation describes enzymes or catalytic systems that require more than one cofactor to achieve activity or to complete a reaction step. Cofactors can be metal ions, organic molecules known as coenzymes, or prosthetic groups that remain bound to the enzyme. The arrangement and interaction of multiple cofactors can influence substrate binding, electron transfer, redox properties, and overall catalytic efficiency.

The term is not common in formal biochemical nomenclature, and when it is used it often serves to emphasize the multiplicity of cofactor requirements or to describe multi-component catalytic assemblies, such as metalloenzymes or multi-enzyme complexes where several cofactors participate in catalysis.

Outside biology, multicofactor is sometimes confused with terms in other domains, most notably multifactor authentication (MFA) in cybersecurity, which uses multiple verification methods to authorize access. The two concepts are unrelated.
