Multicatalyst refers to a catalytic system containing multiple distinct active sites or catalysts that work together to convert substrates through more than one reaction step. The concept is central to tandem or cascade catalysis, where the product of one transformation is immediately consumed by a subsequent catalyst, enabling multi-step syntheses in a single reaction vessel without isolating intermediates.

Multicatalyst systems can be realized in various forms. In heterogeneous settings, solids bearing several metal centers or functional groups—such as bimetallic nanoparticles, metal–organic frameworks with multiple active sites, or supported catalysts on a single scaffold—can perform sequential transformations. In homogeneous systems, different soluble catalysts can be combined to execute complementary reactions, provided the activities are compatible. Biohybrid approaches integrate enzymes with inorganic catalysts to couple biocatalysis with chemical steps.

Key design considerations include compatibility among active sites to avoid mutual deactivation, control of leaching and transport limitations, and balancing the kinetics of each step to prevent bottlenecks. Selectivity and recycling are often enhanced by confining active sites within a single material or reactor. Advantages of multicatalysis include shortened synthetic sequences, reduced solvent use and purification, and access to reactions that couple disparate chemistries.

Challenges involve catalyst deactivation, complexity of synthesis and characterization, potential cross-reactivity, and scalability. Ongoing research employs advanced materials, in situ spectroscopy, and computational modeling to understand cooperative effects and optimize performance. Multicatalysis is applied in fine chemical manufacturing, biomass conversion, and pharmaceutical synthesis, where tandem transformations can streamline routes and improve sustainability.
