Multicastbroadcast is not a standard term in networking. In practice, networks distinguish between multicast and broadcast delivery, and “multicastbroadcast” is sometimes used informally to describe attempts to combine or imitate these delivery methods. True broadcast and true multicast serve different purposes and have different routing behaviors.

Broadcast refers to delivering a packet to all devices on a local network segment. In IPv4, a local broadcast address such as 255.255.255.255 or a network-specific broadcast reaches every host on the broadcast domain but is typically not forwarded by routers. Broadcast is simple but does not scale well beyond a single LAN because every device on the segment processes the frames, and routers generally do not forward broadcast frames.

Multicast refers to delivering a packet to a specific group of interested receivers, identified by a multicast IP address (IPv4: 224.0.0.0/4; IPv6 uses dedicated multicast addresses). Members opt in to a multicast group, and routers forward multicast traffic only to networks with interested listeners. Group membership is managed by protocols such as IGMP (IPv4) or MLD (IPv6). PIM and other multicast routing protocols enable scalable distribution across multiple routers and networks.

Applications and considerations: multicast is widely used for streaming media, conferencing, and software updates, offering bandwidth efficiency when many receivers are present. Broadcast remains useful for discovery and simple LAN-wide notices but is limited to local networks and can cause unnecessary traffic. Security considerations include potential spoofing or amplification attacks in multicast deployments; network equipment often provides mechanisms to control and secure group membership and forwarding.
