The design of a multiband vertical antenna typically involves a single vertical element that is modified to present different electrical lengths at different frequencies. This is often achieved through the use of loading coils, traps, or by employing a combination of different lengths of wire or tubing within the antenna structure. Loading coils, placed strategically along the vertical element, effectively shorten the antenna electrically, allowing it to resonate on lower frequency bands. Traps are resonant circuits that act as filters, effectively "cutting off" or bypassing sections of the antenna at specific frequencies, thus allowing resonance on multiple bands.

One of the primary advantages of multiband vertical antennas is their space efficiency. They require a relatively small footprint compared to multiband horizontal antennas like dipoles or yagis, making them an attractive option for operators with limited space. They also offer a low angle of radiation, which is beneficial for long-distance communication (DX). However, their efficiency can sometimes be lower than full-size monoband antennas, particularly on the lower frequency bands, due to the losses associated with loading coils or traps. Ground radial systems are crucial for the performance of most vertical antennas, including multiband designs, as they form the counterpoise and significantly influence radiation efficiency and impedance.
