Muististruktuurit, known in English as memory structures, refers to the organizational frameworks and methods used to store and retrieve information within the human mind. These structures are not physical entities but rather conceptual models that help us understand how memories are encoded, consolidated, and accessed. Psychologists and cognitive scientists have proposed various models to explain these processes, with each highlighting different aspects of memory's complexity.

One foundational concept is the multi-store model, which posits distinct sensory, short-term, and long-term memory stores. Information initially enters through sensory memory, which has a very brief duration. If attended to, it moves to short-term memory, capable of holding a limited amount of information for a short period. Through rehearsal or elaboration, information can then be transferred to long-term memory, which has a vast capacity and can retain information indefinitely.

Another influential framework is the levels of processing model, which suggests that memory strength depends on how deeply information is processed. Shallow processing, focusing on superficial features like the sound of a word, leads to weaker memories. In contrast, deep processing, involving semantic meaning and connections to existing knowledge, results in more robust and easily retrievable memories.

Working memory, a more modern concept, views short-term memory not as a passive storage unit but as an active system responsible for holding and manipulating information for complex cognitive tasks like reasoning and learning. It comprises components such as the phonological loop for verbal information and the visuospatial sketchpad for visual and spatial data, all overseen by a central executive. Understanding these memory structures is crucial for fields ranging from education to artificial intelligence.
