Muistilohkot, or memory blocks, is a term used in Finnish computing to describe contiguous regions of memory that store data or program state. The concept appears in programming, operating systems, and storage contexts, and it covers both volatile RAM memory and blocks used in persistent storage.

In dynamic memory allocation, a memory allocator divides a process’s address space into blocks of various sizes. When a program requests memory, the allocator assigns a free block and records metadata such as its size, status, and links to other blocks. Blocks can come from a heap, a memory pool, or other allocation schemes. Deallocation returns blocks to the free pool for reuse. Fragmentation can occur when free blocks are too small or irregularly sized to satisfy future requests.

In storage and file systems, data is stored in fixed-size blocks on secondary storage devices. The block size is a fundamental transfer unit: larger blocks can improve sequential read/write performance but may waste space for small files. File systems map files to sequences of blocks and may use indirect or multi-level block mappings to handle large files. Block caching and buffering influence performance as well.

Block management strategies include first-fit or best-fit allocation, segregated free lists, and more advanced schemes such as the buddy allocator or slab caches.
