Muistihäviö, also known as amnesia, refers to the loss of memory. This condition can manifest in various ways, from forgetting recent events to losing the ability to recall personal history or learned skills. It is not a disease itself but rather a symptom of an underlying issue, which can be physical or psychological.

Causes of muistihäviö are diverse. Physical causes include head injuries, strokes, brain tumors, infections, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. Alcohol and drug abuse can also contribute to memory loss, as can certain medical conditions such as vitamin deficiencies. Psychological factors, like severe stress, trauma, or certain mental health disorders, can also lead to dissociative amnesia, where memory loss is a defense mechanism.

There are several types of muistihäviö. Retrograde amnesia involves the loss of memories acquired before the onset of the condition, while anterograde amnesia is characterized by the inability to form new memories after the event that caused the amnesia. Transient global amnesia is a temporary, sudden episode of memory loss that usually resolves on its own.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, neurological examination, and cognitive tests. Imaging techniques like MRI or CT scans may be used to identify structural abnormalities in the brain. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. If it's due to a treatable condition like a vitamin deficiency or infection, addressing that may restore memory. For degenerative conditions, treatments focus on managing symptoms and slowing progression. Psychological amnesia may be treated with therapy.
