Muinaistiede is the Finnish term for the science of past cultures, focusing on how people lived, organized, and interacted with their environment by studying material remains such as tools, houses, burials, and landscapes. In contemporary Finnish scholarship the field is usually called arkeologia (archaeology); muinaistiede is encountered mainly in historical writings or when emphasizing broader questions about ancient knowledge and civilizations.

Researchers use a range of methods to reconstruct past lifeways. Fieldwork includes surveys and excavations; laboratory analysis covers ceramics, metals, bones, seeds and pollen. Dating techniques such as radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology, and luminescence establish chronologies. Typology, stratigraphy, and contextual interpretation are used to understand artefacts, while landscape archaeology studies how sites relate to their surrounding environments. Subfields include archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, maritime archaeology, and conservation science. Digital methods (GIS, 3D recording) are increasingly common.

In Finland and elsewhere, muinaistiede/arkeologia has strong ties to museums, heritage institutions, and national policy. The discipline is typically grounded in collaboration with historians, anthropologists, geologists, and philologists. Ethical principles emphasize respectful handling of human remains, protection of archaeological sites, and cooperation with descendant communities and stakeholders. The field contributes to cultural heritage management, education, and public understanding of the past through research publications, museum exhibits, and the safeguarding of archaeological resources.
