mudlark
A mudlark is a person who scavenges in river mud or foreshore for items of value. Historically, this practice was common in London along the River Thames. Mudlarks would search for anything that could be sold, such as coal, rope, metal, or discarded goods. In the 19th century, it was often a profession for the poor and destitute, with children particularly engaged in the activity. The word itself is believed to have originated in the 17th century.
