mudelta

Mudelta is a geomorphological term describing a river delta in which fine-grained sediments, primarily mud and clay, dominate over coarser sands and gravels. This results in a broad, low-lying landform that is often rich in wetlands, mudflats, and networked tidal channels. Mudeltas form where a river carries a large suspended-sediment load but the receiving basin has low energy, allowing fine particles to settle and accumulate. Tidal action and seasonal floods further distribute and compact the mud, creating marshes, swamps, and a relatively gentle topography.

In terms of setting, mudeltas are common in tropical and subtropical basins with substantial sediment supply and subsiding coastal plains. They contrast with sandy or gravel-rich deltas, which build out through coarser-grained deposits under higher-energy conditions. The resulting ecosystems are typically productive and support diverse wetland habitats, including mangroves, waterfowl, and fish species. Human use often includes agriculture on rich, clay-based soils and fisheries in the surrounding wetlands, while management challenges include subsidence, sea-level rise, and disruptions to sediment supply from upstream damming and river engineering.
