Mousebirds are a small order of perching birds, Coliiformes, native to sub-Saharan Africa. They are characterized by their long, thin bodies and extravagant crests, which they can raise or lower. Their most distinctive feature, however, is their ability to rotate their second and fourth toes forward, allowing them to climb and perch with surprising agility, even upside down. This adaptation helps them navigate their arboreal habitats.

There are six species of mousebird, grouped into two families. The larger family, Coliidae, contains the white-faced mousebird, blue-naped mousebird, Speckled mousebird, and red-faced mousebird. The smaller family, Uroplatidae, contains only the single species, the white-backed mousebird. Mousebirds are primarily frugivorous and insectivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, nectar, and insects. They are social birds, often found in flocks that can range in size from a few individuals to several dozen. Their calls are typically high-pitched and chirping.

Mousebirds are diurnal and spend their days foraging and preening. They nest in trees and shrubs, building cup-shaped nests from twigs and grass. Both parents typically share incubation and chick-rearing duties. Their plumage is generally drab, with shades of grey, brown, and white, though some species exhibit patches of brighter color on their heads or wings. The "mouse" in their name refers to their rodent-like movements as they scamper through branches.
