Motorer are devices that convert energy into mechanical work. The term covers electric motors, combustion engines, and hydraulic or pneumatic motors, and they range from tiny geared units to massive industrial machines. They are essential components in manufacturing, transport, and consumer equipment.

Electric motors: The most common type, electric motors, operate on electromagnetic principles. A stator provides a magnetic field while a rotor turns inside it. Induction motors are widely used due to ruggedness; DC motors offer precise speed control. Torque and speed are controlled by current, voltage, frequency, or special drives such as variable-frequency drives.

Other types: Combustion engines burn fuel to produce expanding gases that drive pistons or turbines, turning a shaft. Hydraulics and pneumatics use pressurized fluid to create motion, typically for high torque at low speed.

Construction and efficiency: Motors include components such as rotors, stators, windings or magnets, shafts, bearings, and housings. Efficiency is improved through design and materials, with international standards classifying efficiency (for electric motors, IE1-IE5 and similar). Losses include electrical, mechanical, and core losses. Control methods include gearboxes, variable speed drives, and electronic controllers.

Applications and history: Motors power a wide range of devices from fans and pumps to electric vehicles and robotics. The development of early electric motors in the 19th century and ongoing advances in magnetic materials, power electronics, and control systems have driven broad adoption.
