Motivaatiomalli, or motivation model, refers to a theoretical framework used to understand and explain the driving forces behind human behavior. These models aim to identify the underlying factors that energize, direct, and sustain goal-oriented actions. Different models emphasize various aspects of motivation, such as needs, cognitive processes, and environmental influences.

One prominent category of motivation models is based on needs. Maslow's hierarchy of needs, for instance, suggests that individuals are motivated by a series of needs arranged in a pyramid, starting with basic physiological requirements and progressing to higher-level needs like belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Another need-based model is Herzberg's two-factor theory, which distinguishes between hygiene factors that prevent dissatisfaction and motivators that promote satisfaction and performance.

Cognitive motivation models focus on mental processes. Expectancy theory, for example, proposes that motivation is a product of an individual's belief that their effort will lead to performance (expectancy), that performance will lead to desired outcomes (instrumentality), and the value they place on those outcomes (valence). Goal-setting theory posits that specific, challenging, and achievable goals, along with feedback, are powerful motivators.

Behavioral models, such as reinforcement theory, suggest that motivation is shaped by the consequences of behavior. Positive reinforcement (rewards) increases the likelihood of a behavior recurring, while punishment decreases it. Self-determination theory highlights the importance of intrinsic motivation, stemming from the innate psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Understanding these different models provides valuable insights into how to foster and enhance motivation in various contexts, including education, work, and personal development.
