Motherwort, scientifically known as Leonurus cardiaca, is a perennial herb in the mint family (Lamiaceae). It is native to Europe and Asia and has been widely naturalized in other regions. The plant grows to about 1 to 1.5 meters tall and features square stems, deeply lobed leaves, and clusters of pink to purple flowers.

Traditionally, motherwort has been used for nervous conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, and restlessness, as well as for gynecological symptoms such as menstrual cramps and mild palpitations. Preparations include dried herb for teas, tinctures, and standardized extracts used in herbal medicine.

Phytochemically, motherwort contains essential oils, flavonoids, and various alkaloids such as leonurine, along with diterpenoids and lignans, which are associated with its antispasmodic and mild sedative effects.

Safety and precautions: use is generally limited to short-term use; adverse effects may include gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. It may cause drowsiness and could interact with sedatives, anticoagulants, or other medications. It is typically not recommended during pregnancy due to potential uterine stimulation, and long-term safety data are limited.

Horticulture and uses: motherwort tolerates a range of soils but prefers well-drained soil and sunny to partly shaded sites. It is hardy in temperate regions and is grown ornamentally as well as for traditional medicinal use. Harvesting is usually done when the plant is in bloom.
