Montages are a film editing technique that assembles a series of short shots to condense space and time, reveal relationships between events, or evoke a specific mood or idea. By juxtaposing images that may not be contiguous in the story, montages communicate information quickly and shape audience interpretation.

The concept has its roots in early cinema and developed into a formal theory in Soviet filmmaking. Pioneers such as Kuleshov, Pudovkin, and Eisenstein explored how cutting could generate meaning through shot-to-shot connections. Eisenstein, in particular, championed intellectual montage, where the juxtaposition of images suggests ideas beyond the explicit content of any single shot. Other editors leveraged montage to enhance tempo, emotion, or narrative clarity within various stylistic frameworks.

Montage techniques are often categorized by their effects. Metric montage emphasizes the length of shots to control pace; rhythmic montage aligns cutting with the visual tempo; tonal montage selects shots to establish a prevailing mood; overtonal montage blends tempo and mood for a composite effect; graphical montage relies on visual patterns; and intellectual montage uses juxtaposition to provoke conceptual associations.

In practice, montages are used to show the passage of time, character training or transformation, or rapid progression of events. They are common in film, television, and digital media, and can function within or apart from traditional continuity editing. Notable applications include training sequences in sports films and time-skips that compress long episodes into concise dramatic moments.
