Monomene is a hypothetical chemical species used in theoretical discussions of nanomaterials and molecular architecture. The name, formed from mono- and monomer, reflects the concept of a single monomer unit that could, in principle, assemble into extended networks.

In proposed models, a monomene unit is a small, rigid framework bearing reactive sites that allow covalent bonding with neighboring units. When linked in two dimensions, these units could form sheet-like lattices analogous to graphene but with programmable functionality through side groups or dopants. The hypothetical material would be ultra-light yet mechanically robust, with a high specific surface area and tunable electronic properties dependent on functionalization.

Authors typically describe bottom-up routes starting from designed precursor molecules that contain orthogonal reactive handles, enabling selective, on-surface polymerization or polymerization under high-pressure or catalytic conditions.
