monolyden

Monolyden is a term used in speculative physics and some science-fiction narratives to describe the smallest stable localized excitation that can occur in a one-dimensional lattice. In this context, a monolyden is envisioned as a single quantum of energy and information confined to a discrete site or a small cluster of neighboring sites, behaving as an isolated, particle-like object within the lattice.

The name combines the prefix mono-, meaning single, with a coined suffix -lyden. It is not an established term in mainstream physics, and there is no universally accepted definition or formalism for monolyden outside speculative or fictional usages.

In model studies, such excitations are described as nonlinear localized modes that can persist due to a balance between dispersion from the lattice and nonlinearity.
