Monoepithelioma is a term that has been used to describe a type of tumor characterized by a uniform epithelial cell morphology. Historically, this term was often applied to tumors of glandular origin where the cells appeared very similar throughout the lesion, lacking significant pleomorphism or architectural disarray. It was sometimes used as a descriptor for benign or low-grade malignant epithelial neoplasms.

The concept of monoepithelioma is somewhat dated in modern histopathological classification. Current practice favors more specific diagnoses based on precise cellular differentiation, architectural patterns, and immunohistochemical markers. For instance, a tumor previously labeled monoepithelioma might now be classified as a specific type of adenocarcinoma, adenoma, or a benign glandular neoplasm. The uniformity of the cells, while a descriptive feature, is not sufficient on its own for a definitive diagnosis in contemporary pathology.

The term may still occasionally be encountered in older literature or in specific regional contexts. However, in general medical discourse, more precise diagnostic terminology is preferred to accurately reflect the nature and behavior of the tumor. This includes specifying the organ of origin and the degree of differentiation or malignancy.
