Moniplexing is a technique used in telecommunications and computer networking to transmit multiple independent signals over a single communication channel. This allows for more efficient use of network infrastructure by consolidating data streams that would otherwise require separate physical connections or dedicated bandwidth. The term itself is a portmanteau of "multiplexing" and "mono," suggesting the transmission of multiple signals as if they were a single entity.

There are several common methods of moniplexing. Time-division multiplexing (TDM) divides the channel into time slots, allocating specific slots to different signals in a repeating cycle. Frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) assigns different frequency bands within the channel to each signal. Wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) is a similar concept used in fiber optic communication, where different wavelengths of light carry separate signals. Statistical multiplexing, also known as stat muxing, dynamically allocates bandwidth based on demand, offering greater efficiency than fixed allocation methods.

The primary benefit of moniplexing is cost reduction, as it reduces the need for extensive cabling and infrastructure. It also improves network utilization by allowing multiple users or services to share the same resources. However, moniplexing can introduce complexity in network design and management, and signal interference or errors can affect all multiplexed signals. The choice of moniplexing technique depends on factors such as the type of data, bandwidth requirements, and the underlying communication medium.
