Moisure-indicating refers to materials or devices that reveal the presence or level of moisture in an environment or material by a visible change, most often a color change. These indicators are used to monitor humidity in packaging, storage, or product processing, helping to protect contents from moisture damage and to verify that desiccants are still functioning.

Most common moisture indicators are colorimetric, employing chemical reagents that change color when hydrated or when humidity exceeds a threshold. Reversibility varies; some indicators return to their original color as humidity falls, enabling continuous monitoring, while others provide a single-use cue. Other indicators rely on changes in electrical resistance or optical properties in humidity-sensitive polymers or films.

Materials historically used include cobalt chloride, which shifts from blue (dry) to pink (hydrated), though its toxicity has led to preference for safer alternatives such as silica gel with integrated color indicators, calcium chloride-based cards, or organic dye systems embedded in polymers. Modern indicators may use pH-sensitive dyes, starch-based indicators, or molecular adsorbents linked to colorimetric dyes.

Applications span food and pharmaceutical packaging, electronics and moisture-sensitive goods, wood and paper products, and climate-controlled storage. Humidity indicator cards, label cards, and desiccant packets are common formats. They typically specify a target relative humidity range and response time.

Limitations include potential instability under prolonged exposure to heat or light, limited measurement ranges, and regulatory concerns for certain chemicals. When selecting a moisture-indicator system, factors like the required response range, reversibility, safety, and compatibility with the product are considered.
