mohuese

Mohuese is a constructed language created for the Mohu universe, a fictional setting used in novels, video games, and tabletop role-playing materials. It is presented as the native tongue of the Mohu people, a coastal culture depicted in this world.

It was designed in the early 2010s by a team of linguists and writers involved in world-building for the series and has since expanded through community editions, fan dictionaries, and official companion media.

Its phonology features a five-vowel system [a, e, i, o, u] and a consonant inventory resembling common European languages, including stops, fricatives, nasals, and approximants. Stress is predictable, typically on the penultimate syllable; some phonemes show allophony in loanwords.

The language is largely analytic but marks tense and mood with suffixes on verbs and with preverbal particles. The basic sentence order is subject–verb–object (SVO). The pronoun system distinguishes inclusive and exclusive "we" and includes forms for formal and informal address. Nouns do not mark gender, and numbers follow a decimal system with a plural suffix.

Mohuese is written primarily with a Latin-based alphabet augmented by diacritics to indicate vowel quality and syllable boundaries. A historical script appears in fictional ancient inscriptions within the Mohu corpus.

In-world, Mohuese is taught in schools and cultural centers and is central to Mohu ritual singing and storytelling. Outside the fiction, it has a growing presence in fansites, language-learning communities, and role-playing guides. Sample phrases found in learner materials include greetings and expressions of gratitude, illustrating basic morphosyntactic patterns without relying on English syntax.
