Modélise is the present indicative form of the French verb modéliser, meaning to model. To model is to create a model: a simplified or abstract representation of a system, phenomenon, or process used to analyze, understand, or predict its behavior.

Modelling spans many fields. In science and engineering, models can be physical (a scale model), mathematical (equations), or computational (simulations). The modelling process typically includes defining the purpose, choosing a model type, selecting which features to include, formulating relations, and calibrating the model with data. Validation and assessment of uncertainty are essential.

In data practice, modelling concerns structuring information—data modelling with schemas or ontologies—and, in data science, building predictive models that learn from data. In software engineering, modelling supports design through diagrams such as UML, which describe classes, relations, and workflows.

The term is widely used in French and other languages with similar meanings; "il modélise" or "elle modélise" refers to someone who is actively creating or applying a model. Etymology traces back to "modèle" from Italian modello and ultimately Latin modulus, related to measure or form.
