Modalitythings are discrete data units used to encode modality-specific information within multimodal systems. The term modalitythings blends modality, meaning a sensing channel or way of experiencing information, with things, emphasizing modular, composable units. While not a fixed standard everywhere, the concept is used in discussions of data architectures that require uniform handling of diverse modalities.

Each modalitything includes a modality label (for example vision, audio, text, or touch), a timestamp, and quality or confidence metadata. Optional semantic annotations may describe content such as objects, actions, or linguistic cues. This metadata enables alignment and temporal synchronization across modalities.

Examples include a vision modalitything that encodes a feature map or detected objects, an audio modalitything containing MFCCs or waveform features, a text modalitything with token embeddings and part-of-speech tags, and a tactile modalitything carrying haptic sensor readings.

In practice, modalitythings support data fusion, multimodal learning, and cross-modal retrieval by providing a uniform interface for disparate data streams. They facilitate pipeline design, caching, and provenance tracking, and they can be serialized for transmission between components in distributed systems.
