Modalidad is a Spanish noun that denotes the manner, form, or type in which something occurs or is organized. It comes from Latin modus, meaning “manner” or “method,” and is used across fields to name a way of doing things, a form of expression, or a particular protocol.

In linguistics, modalidad (modality) refers to the aspect of language that expresses possibility, obligation, necessity, or ability. It is commonly realized through modal verbs such as poder and deber, as well as adverbs and other constructions. Academic work often distinguishes epistemic modality (what the speaker believes to be true), deontic modality (permission and obligation), and dynamic modality (capability).
