Miðbænum, often written Miðbærinn in Icelandic, refers to the central district and historic core of Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital. In English, the area is usually described as the city center or downtown. It encompasses the old harbor district and the area around Austurvöllur square, including the main streets such as Laugavegur, Bankastræti, and Skólavörðustígur. It is Reykjavík’s most densely built part and functions as the city’s commercial, governmental, and cultural heart.
