mittelahustuvad

Mittelahustuvad is an Estonian term used to describe substances that do not dissolve in a given solvent under stated conditions. The word combines mitte- (not) with lahustuv (soluble) and the plural form -uvad. In technical writing, mittelahustuvad refers to materials whose solubility in a particular solvent is negligible or effectively zero for practical purposes.

In chemistry and related fields, solubility is a key property used to predict dissolution behavior, precipitation, and transport. Substances described as mittelahustuvad typically have very low solubility in water at standard conditions and are often characterized by a low solubility product (Ksp) or by reported solubility values near zero. Common examples include many inorganic salts such as calcium carbonate and barium sulfate, as well as oxides like silicon dioxide. Insolubility can depend on factors such as pH, temperature, and the presence of complexing ions; some materials may appear insoluble under one set of conditions but dissolve under others.

The term is mainly used in Estonian-language scientific texts, but the concept aligns with the English notion of insolubility or non-dissolution. In applied contexts, the insolubility of a substance influences processes such as precipitation, sedimentation, and drug formulation, where formulation strategies may aim to enhance or circumvent limited solubility.
