Mitoosillas are a hypothesized class of subcellular structures proposed to exist as small, semi-autonomous organelles within the cytoplasm of some eukaryotic cells. They are suggested to participate in energy metabolism and redox regulation, particularly when mitochondrial performance is stressed. The name combines mito-, from mitochondrion, with a diminutive suffix to imply small size.

Described structural features are provisional. In speculative models, mitoosillas range from tens of nanometers to about one micrometer in diameter, are bounded by a lipid membrane, and contain a minimal set of enzymes and ribosomes. Some hypotheses permit a compact genome or exchange of components with mitochondria or the nucleus.

Discovery and status: The concept arose in speculative biology and exploratory imaging studies in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It remains controversial, with no broad consensus on existence, prevalence, or origin, and no standardized detection method.

Proposed roles include localized ATP generation under hypoxic conditions, processing of metabolic intermediates, and buffering of the cellular redox state. In some accounts mitoosillas are considered part of a continuum of endosymbiotic-derived organelles and may exchange metabolites with mitochondria, peroxisomes, or the cytosol.
