Myoglobinemia refers to the presence of myoglobin in the blood. Myoglobin is a protein found primarily in muscle tissue that stores oxygen. Normally, myoglobin is contained within muscle cells. When muscle tissue is damaged, myoglobin can be released into the bloodstream.

The most common cause of elevated myoglobin levels in the blood is rhabdomyolysis, a condition characterized by the breakdown of skeletal muscle. Causes of rhabdomyolysis are diverse and can include strenuous exercise, trauma, certain medications, infections, and prolonged immobility. Other less common causes of myoglobinemia can include very intense physical exertion without underlying muscle damage, and in some rare genetic muscle disorders.

The detection of myoglobin in the blood is typically done through a blood test. Elevated levels of myoglobin can indicate muscle injury. While myoglobinemia itself is a marker of muscle damage, the primary concern is often the underlying cause of the muscle breakdown. High levels of myoglobin in the blood can also lead to kidney damage as the kidneys attempt to filter the excess protein. Symptoms associated with significant myoglobinemia often stem from the underlying condition, such as muscle pain, weakness, and dark-colored urine. Diagnosis and management focus on identifying and treating the cause of muscle injury and preventing complications.
