Minirizotronos are small-scale lysimeters designed for observing and measuring root system dynamics and soil water movement. The term "minirizotron" combines "mini," indicating a smaller scale, with "rizotron," derived from Greek words meaning "root" and "measure." These devices typically consist of a transparent tube or access tube inserted into the soil at an angle, allowing direct visual access to the root zone.

Researchers insert minirizotrons into the soil, creating a viewing window into the subsurface. The transparent tubes are usually made of materials like acrylic or polycarbonate. Through these tubes, soil scientists and ecologists can observe root growth, elongation, branching, and mortality over time.
