Minimagnets are magnets with very small physical dimensions, typically ranging from micrometers to nanometers. In this size regime, magnetic behavior is strongly influenced by surface effects, shape anisotropy, and thermal fluctuations, which can alter coercivity, remanence, and relaxation dynamics compared with bulk magnets.

A key feature of minimagnets is the transition between multi-domain and single-domain states. Particles below a certain size often become single-domain, which can yield high stability of magnetization and large coercive fields. When particles become extremely small, thermal energy can compete with magnetic anisotropy, leading to superparamagnetism. In this state, magnetization aligns with an external field but shows negligible remanence when the field is removed, reducing the risk of particle aggregation due to residual magnetization.

Materials and fabrication methods vary with intended use. Common permanent magnet materials such as neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) are used in micromagnets, while ferrites provide inexpensive options for smaller devices. At the nanoscale, iron oxide nanoparticles (magnetite or maghemite) serve as superparamagnetic agents. Fabrication techniques include top-down lithography and deposition for micromagnets, and bottom-up chemical synthesis or templated growth for nanoparticles and colloids.

Applications span data storage, magnetic sensing (including read heads and magnetoresistive sensors), and miniature actuation in microelectromechanical systems. In biomedicine, minimagnets are used as MRI contrast agents, for targeted drug delivery, and in magnetic hyperthermia therapies. Challenges include surface and environmental stability, oxidation, biocompatibility for biomedical uses, and precise control of size, shape, and magnetic properties.
