Mineralokortykosteroidem is the Polish term for mineralocorticoid. Mineralocorticoids are a class of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in regulating the balance of salt and water in the body, primarily by acting on the kidneys. The most important and well-known mineralocorticoid is aldosterone, which is produced by the adrenal glands.

Aldosterone's main function is to increase the reabsorption of sodium ions and the secretion of potassium ions in the renal tubules. This action leads to increased water retention, which in turn helps to maintain blood volume and blood pressure. Disruptions in mineralocorticoid activity can have significant health consequences, leading to conditions such as hyperaldosteronism, where there is an overproduction of aldosterone, causing high blood pressure and low potassium levels, or Addison's disease, a deficiency of mineralocorticoids resulting in low blood pressure and electrolyte imbalances.

The production and release of aldosterone are tightly controlled by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which responds to changes in blood pressure and sodium levels. Hormones like ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) also have a smaller influence on mineralocorticoid secretion.
