These technologies aim to mitigate environmental problems such as air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource depletion while enabling societal and economic growth.

Renewable energy technologies—such as solar photovoltaics, wind turbines, hydroelectric turbines, and bioenergy systems—play a central role in decarbonizing power systems. Simultaneously, energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion batteries, pumped-storage, and flywheel systems, support grid stability and the integration of variable renewable resources. In the transport sector, electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cells reduce petroleum consumption and tailpipe emissions, while advanced public transport schemes lower overall traffic-related pollution.

In industrial and municipal settings, processes for waste reduction and recycling, such as mechanical reprocessing, chemical feedstock recovery, and closed-loop manufacturing, minimize material loss. Water treatment technologies—membrane filtration, advanced oxidation, and constructed wetlands—provide potable and reclaimed water while protecting aquatic ecosystems. Despite significant progress, environmental technologies face barriers including high capital costs, technical uncertainties, and regulatory hurdles.
