Military religion refers to the presence and role of religious beliefs, institutions, and practices within armed forces. It encompasses organized chaplaincy and religious services, moral and ethical guidance, rites of passage, and the influence of religion on military culture, discipline, and decision-making.

Historically, armies have often contracted with religious bodies to provide spiritual support to soldiers. In ancient and medieval times, state rites and priesthoods accompanied armies; in modern states, many armed forces formalize religious life through chaplains and dedicated chapels, while maintaining secular command structures.

Institutionally, many militaries employ chaplains representing multiple faiths who are commissioned military personnel. They provide worship services, counseling, and ethical guidance, and they liaise with civilian religious communities. In some countries, chaplains operate under legal protections to minister to all service members regardless of belief, while policy may limit proselytizing within units.

Legal frameworks vary. In secular democracies such as the United States, the armed forces support free exercise of religion under constitutional protections, while maintaining neutrality in official military functions. Other nations have established church–military relationships, while some emphasize strict secular limits on religious symbols or activities within service institutions.

Contemporary issues include balancing religious accommodation with unit cohesion, managing interfaith relations, and addressing the use of religious language in operations. Critics may describe “military religion” as a source of moral justification for war, while supporters emphasize morale, identity, and voluntary spiritual care for personnel.
