A mikrometerskrue, commonly known as a micrometer screw gauge or simply a micrometer, is a precision measuring instrument used for making accurate and fine measurements of length. It utilizes a precisely machined screw mechanism to convert small linear movements into larger, more easily readable ones. The main components of a micrometer include a fixed anvil, a movable spindle, a sleeve, and a thimble.

The measurement is taken by bringing the anvil and spindle into contact with the object being measured. The sleeve contains a scale marked in millimeters, and the thimble has a finely graduated scale, typically divided into 50 or 100 parts. By rotating the thimble, the spindle moves linearly towards or away from the anvil. The reading is obtained by combining the measurement from the sleeve's main scale with the reading from the thimble's scale. The precision of a micrometer allows for measurements down to fractions of a millimeter, often 0.01 mm or even 0.001 mm, making it invaluable in engineering, machining, and scientific research where precise dimensions are critical. Different types of micrometers exist for measuring external dimensions, internal dimensions, and depths.
