Mikroerätekniikoita, known in English as microbatching, is a data processing technique where data is processed in small, discrete batches rather than as a continuous stream or a single large batch. This approach aims to strike a balance between the low latency of stream processing and the throughput and efficiency of batch processing. In microbatching, data arrives and is collected for a short period, typically a few seconds or minutes. Once the accumulated data reaches a predetermined size or the time interval expires, it is processed as a single, small batch.

The core idea behind microbatching is to achieve near real-time processing without the complexity and resource overhead often associated with true stream processing systems. It offers a more predictable processing model and can leverage existing batch processing frameworks and tools. This makes it a popular choice for applications requiring a good balance of speed and manageability, such as certain types of analytics, fraud detection, and data warehousing where immediate results are not strictly necessary but delays of hours are unacceptable.

Compared to stream processing, microbatching introduces a slight latency because data must wait for the batch to form and then be processed. However, this latency is usually much lower than traditional batch processing. Conversely, compared to pure stream processing, microbatching can offer better throughput and easier fault tolerance due to the atomic nature of batch processing. The size of the microbatch and the interval between batches are critical parameters that need to be tuned based on the specific application requirements and available system resources to optimize performance and latency.
