Because usage varies, the exact definition and size range of micromeetrites are not consistently applied.

Micromeetrites, when identified, are understood to originate from extraterrestrial material and can be recovered from environments that preserve dust and debris from space. Common sources for study include Antarctic ice and snow, deep-sea sediments, and lacustrine or loess deposits. In some contexts, micromeetrite-like particles may be observed as alien spherules or irregular grains that bear recognizable textural or chemical signatures of meteoritic material.
