Microeukaryotes are microscopic eukaryotic organisms, typically single-celled or forming very small colonies. Methodologically, microeukaryotes are detected through microscopy, culture when possible, and molecular methods such as environmental DNA sequencing. Cultivation is not always straightforward, and many taxa rely on indirect detection. Their study informs ecology, evolution, and health, because several microeukaryotes are important pathogens (for example Plasmodium, Giardia, Entamoeba, and Toxoplasma) or contributors to disease and blooms in aquatic systems.
