Microethnografie is a qualitative research approach within ethnography that concentrates on the detailed study of social interactions and everyday practices in narrowly defined settings or moments. Rather than seeking broad cultural generalizations, it aims to show how social order is produced, negotiated, and made visible in micro-contexts such as a single meeting, a classroom, a market stall, or a neighborhood activity.

Researchers typically conduct fieldwork in natural settings using participant observation, informal conversations, and sometimes audio or video recordings. Data types include field notes, transcripts of conversations, and contextual material like artifacts or environmental cues. Analysis emphasizes fine-grained examination of talk-in-interaction, nonverbal communication, sequence organization, turn-taking, gaze, gestures, and how participants display membership in social categories, roles, and norms. Microethnography often involves micro-analysis of interaction and the study of routines and practices that, though ordinary, reproduce social orders.

Applications span education, workplaces, healthcare, urban life, and other everyday environments, with attention to language and communication, identity, power, and culture. The approach favors rich, contextual understanding and a close look at how social life is organized in moment-to-moment practices.

Strengths include depth and contextual insight; limitations involve limited generalizability, potential researcher bias, and the resource-intensive nature of data collection and transcription. Ethical considerations cover informed consent, privacy, and the responsible handling of sensitive information.
