Metsäpääoma, or forest capital, refers to the economic value derived from forest resources and the ecosystems that forests provide. The term is most commonly used in Finland, where significant portions of the land area are covered by forests and the timber industry is a major sector of the economy. Metsäpääoma encompasses both the marketable products such as pulp, paper, timber, and bioenergy as well as ecological services including carbon sequestration, watershed protection, and biodiversity support.

Historically, the concept emerged in the late 20th century as a response to increasing awareness of the need for sustainable forest management. Finnish forest policy adopted the idea of maintaining and enhancing forest capital to balance commercial objectives with long‑term environmental stewardship. According to the Finnish National Forest Programme, forest capital is monitored through indicators such as growth rate, stand density, and health status, which are then translated into financial terms for stakeholders and policymakers.

Metsäpääoma also plays a key role in global climate initiatives. Forests act as significant carbon sinks, and the value of forest capital is partly measured in terms of avoided CO₂ emissions. In carbon markets, credits generated from sustainable forest projects are sold to companies seeking to offset their emissions, thereby creating an international revenue stream for forest owners. Additionally, conservation efforts that preserve old-growth stands and biodiversity-rich areas are increasingly recognized as enhancing the non‑market value of forest capital.

The management of forest capital is guided by a framework of policies, market mechanisms, and scientific research, ensuring that forest resources can continue to support both economic activity and ecological integrity for future generations.
