A metrologian is a professional engaged in the science of metrology, the study of measurement. The term combines metrology with the suffix -ian to denote a practitioner in the field. National metrology institutes (NMIs) maintain primary standards, provide calibration services, and support the development of measurement infrastructure. Legal metrology, regulated by government authorities, governs instruments used in trade and public safety to ensure fair commerce and consumer protection.

Education and career paths typically require a background in physics, engineering, or a dedicated metrology program. Training covers calibration techniques, uncertainty analysis, statistics, quality management systems, and ethics in measurement. Metrologians may work in NMIs, industrial laboratories, manufacturing environments, or research institutions, contributing to accuracy, consistency, and confidence in measurements worldwide.
