Methyl salicylates are the methyl esters of salicylic acid, the best known member being methyl salicylate (methyl 2-hydroxybenzoate). Its chemical formula is C8H8O3 and its molecular weight is about 152.15 g/mol. It is a colorless to pale liquid with a characteristic wintergreen odor, and it is soluble in many organic solvents.

Natural occurrence and production: Methyl salicylate occurs in nature, most notably in wintergreen oils derived from Gaultheria species, where it provides the distinctive scent. Industrially, it is produced by esterifying salicylic acid with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst (for example sulfuric acid). It can also be obtained via alternative esterification routes or as a byproduct of other chemical processes.

Uses: The compound has a range of commercial applications. It is used as a fragrance and flavoring agent in cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, and oral care products, and as the familiar wintergreen flavoring in candies and beverages. Medically, methyl salicylate is a component of topical analgesic and anti-inflammatory liniments and ointments, where it acts as a counterirritant to produce a warming sensation that helps soothe muscle and joint discomfort.

Safety and regulation: Methyl salicylate is safe in small amounts when used as a flavor or fragrance ingredient. However, concentrated forms can be toxic if ingested or absorbed in large quantities and can cause salicylate poisoning. In addition, methanol produced on hydrolysis can pose additional risks.
