Methoxyethane, also known as ethyl methyl ether, is an organic compound with the formula C3H8O. It is an ether in which a methoxy group is bonded to an ethyl group (CH3-O-CH2-CH3). In common usage it is referred to as methyl ethyl ether (MEE). It is a colorless, volatile liquid with an ether-like odor.

Production and use

Ethyl methyl ether can be produced by acid-catalyzed condensation of methanol and ethanol, a dehydration reaction that forms the unsymmetrical ether. It is mainly used as a specialty solvent for coatings, waxes, resins, fats, and oils, and serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis.
