Methoxyethane

Methoxyethane, also known as ethyl methyl ether, is an organic compound with the formula C3H8O. It is an ether in which a methoxy group is bonded to an ethyl group (CH3-O-CH2-CH3). In common usage it is referred to as methyl ethyl ether (MEE). It is a colorless, volatile liquid with an ether-like odor.

Production and use

Ethyl methyl ether can be produced by acid-catalyzed condensation of methanol and ethanol, a dehydration reaction that forms the unsymmetrical ether. It is mainly used as a specialty solvent for coatings, waxes, resins, fats, and oils, and serves as an intermediate in organic synthesis. Its relatively low cost and favorable solvency characteristics for certain organic materials make it attractive for some industrial applications. It is typically handled under conditions that minimize vapour formation and exposure.

Physical and chemical properties

Methoxyethane is a low-boiling, relatively low‑molecular-weight ether. It is soluble in many organic solvents and has limited solubility in water. As with many ethers, it is relatively flammable and volatile, and vapors can form explosive mixtures with air.

Safety and storage

Methoxyethane should be stored in tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition. It presents inhalation and fire hazards; vapors can cause dizziness or drowsiness and may impair performance. It should be used with appropriate engineering controls, personal protective equipment, and in accordance with applicable safety regulations to minimize exposure and environmental release.
