Meteorizzazione refers to the breakdown and alteration of rocks and minerals at or near the Earth's surface. It is a crucial process in shaping the Earth's landforms and creating the materials that form soils. There are three main types of weathering: physical, chemical, and biological.

Physical weathering, also known as mechanical weathering, involves the disintegration of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Common mechanisms include frost wedging, where water seeps into cracks, freezes, and expands, widening the cracks; thermal expansion, where rocks heat and cool, causing them to expand and contract; and abrasion, where rocks are worn down by friction from other rocks, sand, or debris.

Chemical weathering involves the decomposition of rocks through chemical reactions. This can occur through dissolution, where minerals dissolve in water; oxidation, where minerals react with oxygen, often leading to rust-like formations; and hydrolysis, where water reacts with minerals, breaking them down into new substances.

Biological weathering is the weakening and subsequent breakdown of rocks that occurs due to living organisms. This can involve plants whose roots grow into cracks and force them apart, or the action of microorganisms that produce acids that can dissolve rock minerals.

The rate and type of weathering depend on various factors, including climate, rock type, and the presence of water and biological activity. Weathering plays a vital role in the rock cycle, transforming solid rock into sediment that can be transported, deposited, and eventually form new sedimentary rocks.
